Statement from CHI: 

In light of the humanitarian crisis ongoing in Ukraine, Children’s Health Ireland Global Health is working with a number of partners, both nationally and internationally, to provide carefully coordinated support for Ukrainian children in need of acute medical care.

CHI is a member of the European Children’s Hospitals Organisation (ECHO) and we will endeavour to support colleagues at children’s hospitals in Ukraine to ensure children and families arriving in Ireland receive the specialised healthcare they need for varying medical conditions. We have also offered to accept children currently being treated in Poland if the systems there get overwhelmed and if we can accommodate this planned transfer of care without impacting on access to our specialist services.

While capacity and resourcing in Ireland’s only children’s Haemato-oncology unit in CHI at Crumlin must always be considered, at present, CHI is already looking after a small number of Ukrainian children who require specialist cancer treatment.  

CHI Global Health will continue to work directly with the HSE and DoH as part of the national and EU response, and with ECHO and relevant clinical, charitable and other agencies supporting the relief efforts and coordinating care for children that will best serve their particular acute medical needs.CHI looks after new patients up to the age of 16 years. Young people aged 16 plus will be seen in adult hospitals.

Our thoughts are with the children and families going through unimaginable trauma in their home country of Ukraine at this time.
