The aim of the project is to recycle empty hand hygiene product cartridges. It is projected that 500 cartridges per year in CHI at Connolly will be prevented from entering inappropriate waste streams.

Healthcare contributes to the global challenge of plastic waste. CHI at Connolly in partnership with our hand hygiene product supply partners established the logistics and benefits of closed-loop recovery and recycling of high-density polyethylene plastic by placing all 1 Litre empty sanitiser and soap cartridges into a bespoke container that is taken to a recycling plant.

The team led by Jimmy Maguire (MTA lead) included IPC, clinical nurse leads, cleaning services staff and SCJ research and development team, began discussing ideas and plans for the project in August 2023 and were delighted to see it being welcomed by all staff, our patients and their families. There was great engagement and learning on the day. The launch included sweet and savory treats, quizzes, prizes, visual information and educational tools. We learned about some of our patients’ input into their green-school’s groups too.
