This is our new, monthly, all CHI staff newsletter to help keep you informed and up to date on all things New Children’s Hospital and Project Ogham.

Floor-by-floor guide

The New Hospital will have 93 day beds and 380 inpatient rooms 300 with ensuite facilities. Each spacious room will have a spacious bed for a parent or guardian. A PDF version of the above file can be downloaded here. An OPD version is available here.

Due to the sheer size of the hospital, the signage will be by a numbering system – this wayfinding system is aimed at helping families with the journey, legibility, accessibility, design, and consistency. For example: 53C, denotes 5th Floor, Zone 3, Ward 3C.

Laboratory

One of the most significant developments in the new NCH will be the brand new laboratory facilities. Located on the brightly lit lower ground floor and close to critical clinical areas, staff will benefit from the modern, spacious, and state of the art laboratory services provided. The service will enable improved and rapid turnaround times for many tests, and a wider range of tests for many clinical conditions. The new laboratory will be a fully digital facility and will integrate with the new electronic health record (EHR). The benefits of the new laboratory include:

Digital ordering of tests and test results (order comms) eliminating paper test request forms for inpatient and outpatient requests
Repatriation of some testing currently sent out to the UK and beyond, reducing turnaround times for test results
New ways of working. For example, a centralised specimen reception area supporting more efficient collection and turnarounds of test results

There will be 8 laboratories in what will be a single CHI department of paediatric laboratory medicine. In addition, there will be two specialist fit out laboratories built to clean room standards. Read more about each lab here.

ED (Includes Short Stay Observation Units)

The existing CHI emergency departments will come together in the NCH in a spacious, modern, purpose-built ED department on the ground floor. Staff will be working in generous triage rooms, exam rooms and workstations that have been specifically designed to meet an anticipated 75,000 attendees per annum. The Satellite Urgent Care Centres in Tallaght and Connolly will see 52,000 attendees annually, so in total the ED and UCC teams are planning for 127,000 attendees per annum.

The Emergency Department in the NCH is the length of Grafton Street and includes:

Emergency Department

(POD 1) Majors - 12 bed
(POD 2) Majors - 10 bed
(POD 3) Minors - 12 bed
(POD 4) Short Stay Observation rooms – 12 beds and 6 Resuscitation bays

The national paediatric trauma centre will be based in the ED and the Resus area will have direct access to bedside x-rays and CT, in addition to all Radiology services.

Radiology (Includes 15 day bays)

The CHI Paediatric Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department will provide a child centred service, where parents/guardians can be assured that their children are imaged with the most appropriate and modern techniques. There will be 15 Radiology beds, including 5 General X-Ray rooms, 6 Ultrasound Rooms, 2 Fluoroscopy Rooms, 3 sedation rooms and 2 isolation beds. This will improve patient flow for imaging, where patients will attend directly to Radiology for MRI, CT, and Nuclear Medicine under General anaesthetic. Patients for sedation and other minor procedures will be managed through this unit also.

Here’s just some of the new imaging equipment coming to our new hospital:

CHI are delighted to soon have an Intraoperative MRI (ioMRI) used for large and/or difficult to access tumours (low and high-grade gliomas) where extent of tumour resection is crucial. The patient can be moved from the Operating Theatre directly to have this MRI, and then returned to continue surgery.

What are my options to get there?

Jump on the Luas
The Luas Red line has direct access to the entrance of the NCH at the Rialto stop.
Hop on a bus
An electric bus is scheduled for every 2 minutes servicing the campus at peak times.
Take the train
The site is easily accessible by national rail, commuter services, and the Dart.
Cycle your bike
Dublin bikes, bleeper bikes, and moby bikes are readily available on-site. Including secure bike parking and showering/locker facilities.
By car
Accessible via the national and regional road network via the M50. The M50 provides access to the national motorway network; the M1, M2, M3, M4, M7 and M11.

New Accommodation option for CHI staff at reduced rental rates

Niche Living is a new co-living concept in the heart of Dun Laoghaire, with its own walkway to the adjacent local DART station. This all-inclusive and flexible accommodation option is currently available to move in immediately and reduced rental costs are available to CHI staff.

What is Niche Living?

Niche Living provides 204 private studios available for short to longer term rental to those in search of short-term accommodation. These stylish studios in the heart of Dún Laoghaire, A96 W8XT are sole occupancy.

All expenses are included in one easy monthly cost. Facilities and amenities include:

Membership events, classes and activities are curated by the Niche Living team to inspire and engage. There is always a list of exciting, exclusive events, classes, and activities, curated by the Niche Living team e.g. sailing lessons, BBQ Sundays, Language and Cooking lessons.

There will be close to two thousand lockers in the NCH that will operate like a ‘hot locker’ system similar to that in a gym, where staff will have access to their own locker. Smaller storage will be available on the Level that you will work in. The larger departments will have dedicated lockers. Breakdown as follows:

Theatre Complex: 291

Facilities Management / Catering: 114

The new NCH is fully equipped and designed to deal with infection and infectious disease and the need for isolation facilities. There are 380 individual inpatient rooms which are currently taking shape with fit out of fixtures, ensuites, sliding doors, joinery and medical equipment progressing.

The design process followed international, evidence-based standards in order to ensure the hospital has safe air, water and surfaces. For example, all rooms in the medical and surgical wards, the Emergency Department and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the inpatient rooms are single rooms. Specialised ventilation is also installed. There are 80 specific isolation rooms throughout the in-patient areas.

There are 3 rooms with negative pressure ventilation (NPV).
