The Department of Paediatric Immunology is based at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin and specialises in diagnosing and caring for children who have inborn errors of immunity (IEI).

If your child has an IEI, they might get frequent or severe infections, autoimmunity, severe allergies or experience other health problems. We are the national centre of referral for IEI and take referrals primarily from other paediatricians who suspect IEI. Some children with IEI need treatment with haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). This is currently done in the UK, but our team manages your child’s care before and after the transplant. We also investigate and manage children and young people with secondary immune deficiency.

Outpatient clinics

  • Paediatric Immunology clinics are held in the Medical Tower at CHI Crumlin on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. There is a virtual clinic on Tuesday afternoons.
  • Combined Rheumatology/Immunology Autoinflammatory clinic every 3 months.

We work closely alongside the Paediatric Infectious Diseases team at CHI to provide care for those who have underlying conditions that make them susceptible to infection. We work with all departments at CHI Crumlin to provide in-patient consultations and provide telephone advice to other Paediatric units.

We also work closely with the HSCT team in the Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK where patients with IEI undergo HSCT, as well as the Immunology team in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK where patients undergo gene therapy and thymic transplant when indicated.
