We expect two new devices to arrive by the end of October, and one new device to arrive by the end of November.

Children's Health Ireland currently has two halo traction wheelchairs, (one of which is owned by CHI and one of which is rented by CHI). When the new wheelchairs arrive, the one we currently rent will be returned. CHI will then own a total of four halo traction wheelchairs.

The use of Halo traction wheelchairs is an important component in the management of children with complex spinal deformities, providing enhanced mobility, comfort, and therapeutic support during their hospital stay. By using these wheelchairs, young patients can engage more actively in their recovery, experiencing improved physical outcomes and a better overall hospital experience.

Children's Health Ireland has ordered models of halo traction wheelchairs which are new to the market and specially designed to meet the needs of young scoliosis patients who are undergoing scoliosis treatment in hospital. Until recently, halo traction equipment was not available to purchase, and so it was necessary to modify existing equipment to the bespoke needs of each patient. This was standard practice for Clinical Engineers and Clinical Teams in hospitals around the world.

Thanks to the advent of these new purpose-designed halo traction wheelchairs and devices, Children’s Health Ireland has been able to decommission the old systems and move to these new CE-marked devices.

Mr David Moore, Head of Children's Health Ireland’s Spinal Surgery Management Unit says:

“Currently, Children's Health Ireland has capacity for three patients to be on halo traction in hospital at any one time. There is capacity for two patients at a time in CHI at Crumlin, and one patient at a time in CHI at Temple Steet. These new wheelchairs are a significant step toward improving the quality of care we provide to these patients, and ensuring that our patients have access to the latest resources”.
