Children's Health Ireland (CHI) welcomes the publication by the Health Service Executive (HSE) of its review of the implementation of Scoliosis and Spina Bifida Action Plans for 2022 and 2023.

As part of the HSE review observations, it was determined that the expenditure reported, was used for the purposes intended and no issues were identified. No recommendations were made in the report.

Commenting on the publication, Interim Chief Executive, Ms Fiona Murphy, said;

“The first priority of Children's Health Ireland has always been to provide evidence-based, safe care for the children and young people we treat and their families. We regret any delay in the delivery of the service and we strive every day to reduce waiting lists and waiting times for our patients and their families."
“Importantly, the review shows that a total of 989 surgeries were completed in Children’s Health Ireland under the spinal surgery plans 2022 and 2023; a marked increase in the numbers treated in previous years. Children's Health Ireland continues to increase the capacity required to treat children and young people that need spinal surgery. As of 6th December 2024, Children's Health Ireland has completed 499 spinal surgeries, this year.”

Mr David Moore, Clinical Lead, Paediatric Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery, also welcomed the review’s findings.

“We are pleased that we have been in a position to increase the number of surgeries carried out in 2024 compared to previous years. This is the result of the dedicated funding received from the Department of Health to increase capacity in the service. Children and young people who require spinal surgery are receiving exceptional care through Children’s Health Ireland and internationally through our outsourcing initiatives, and we are committed to getting them access to that care as soon as is possible and as clinically appropriate.”
