The Neonatology service at Children’s Health Ireland looks after new borns with surgical or complex medical needs. CHI is the national quaternary (highest-level) neonatal centre for Ireland. Young babies are transferred to CHI from neonatal units throughout the country and on admission through the Emergency Department.

The service includes special care, high-dependency care and intensive care. High-dependency care is for babies who have additional needs compared to those in special care. Intensive care is reserved for babies with particular needs such as ventilator support.

Our highly qualified staff provides a family-centred, holistic approach to care. We do our utmost to protect the privacy and dignity of your child at all times during their stay.

For healthcare professionals

Referrals should be made to CHI by the relevant maternity/neonatal unit. Referrals from GPs are not accepted – please make a referral to General Paediatrics or other relevant service.

Certain conditions (e.g., relating to Cardiology, Oncology or Neurosurgery) should be referred to the appropriate CHI site. All other referrals should be made to CHI Neonatology and the most appropriate site for admission will be determined by the service.

To refer a non-urgent or non-acute patient to CHI Neonatology, please contact a CHI Consultant Neonatologist and submit the request through the CHI Patient Flow team.

For admissions to ICU, please follow the PICU bridge process and alert a CHI Neonatologist. CHI Neonatology should be notified of all CHI surgical consults or requests for admission.
